We were at the Bunkers’ Site at 4pm for Hash 1430. We hadn’t been there for a wee while. Anyway, the Hares and their GPSs had knocked together two great trails for us on this hot late August afternoon. We runners headed firstly eastwards over stony ground, before encountering a running cheqq. Then we all got confused by a back cheque, before veering south across the side road. Soon we were at the first Czech on top of a small, stony, manmade hill. We then crossed back over the road, to the second checc, with a seismic survey marker on top, as Sean explained. From there, Useless was one of those runners who opted for a shortcut back to base, along with one or two of the others, leaving the diehards to go the distance. The run for the diehards took 1 hour 15 mins; the walk a little less than an hour.

Hugh J. Nuss blasts to the fore, punishing the Hares and then the day’s visitors: Sam, an Egyptian veterinarian in practice in Maadi Digla’s 199^th Street; Finnike and his wife; Elizabeth from Seattle; our Pam, who is 50% Palestinian and half American and also once lived in Malawi, southern Africa, and wants to learn Spanish; and Limp Noodle. He and Hugh J. Nuss did their first Hareing together about five years ago. In fact, Limp Noodle is back after leaving Egypt nearly four years ago. He’s now working in the Agiba HQ in Nasr City. Herr Hund takes the helm, inviting she who’s lost in the desert to step forward for brewskis, namely Blow Hole. She’s joined by Hot Air and Julia and her family for not wearing Hash Tea shirts; Bobby Williams (talking in the Circle); Miss Saigon (thanks for helping pour the beer today); and Spoilt Little Brat (again no Hash Tea shirt). We sing them ‘It’s a Hash House Sin’, before Blow Hole is called up again for spotting foxholes today, along with one of Julia’s daughters, who explains to us why the foxholes are there, and her father, who assures us they are dog holes. Meanwhile, Herr Hund himself stresses that the holes were toilets for the troops in the 1973 War when the bunkers were manned by crack Egyptian soldiers. Lindsay also cops a sherbet, while Erect Runner suggests the holes were made to raise the ground around them. Anyway, we sing them ‘We’re the Hash House Harriers’.

Lots more sinners follow, including Elizabeth (found some petrified wood), wonder boy Doc Bassem and Finnike’s husband, as well as three running shortcutters — Pussy Wig, Useless and Limp Noodle — and Sean, Joey and Ted. Useless and Finnike’s wife receive more refreshments for drinking with the hats on, while we also welcome back Lion Fart and Pin Pricked. Next it’s Juerg, still wearing last week’s unsuitable shoes, Dirty Little Bratwurst With Spoilt Red Chops (has had the toilet seat at home since last December), not to mention our cool sunglasses wearers — the exotic Nadia, Greased Palm, Mystic Meg and babby, Miss Saigon, Julia and Ted. We sing them ‘Dough, a beer’, before Uncle Wes gives all the doctors present refreshments: Mister Dog, No Hare Brain, The Mystical One, Ted, Sam and Pussy Wig. After them, it’s Steve, Paul, one of Julia’s daughters, Greased Palm, Mystic Meg and Doctor Sam, after which the raffle extracting starts with Catherine drawing, with the help of one of Julia’s daughters, Catherine herself! (sweeps the Cap’n Morgan), Pol Pot (grabs a case of Saqqara), Miss Saigon (the box of wine) and Darren (a bottle of the Italian whisky kindly donated by the stunning Athletic Supporter)!

More raffling sees Marie-Belle extrapolate Juerg’s wife (takes the case of blackcurrant soda pop), Uncle Seal (goes for a bottle of the Italian whisky kindly donated by the stunning Athletic Supporter), Marie-Belle herself! (scoops the case of orange Fanta soda pop) and finally Herr Hund (the second case of Saqqara)! Back to Mister Dog, who distributes sherbs to Adel, Kakfa and Doc B, not to mention the glamorous Nadia and Lion Fart. We now sing the ‘Left Tit’ song for those Hashers who will be Hareing Hash 1432, Blow Hole’s last (boo hoo), to be held in Wadi Hof, namely Darren, Barbie’s Greased Balls, Gigi, Hugh J. Nuss and Blow Hole herself. One of Julia’s daughter’s drinks with them. Next, all the teachers present step forward for d-ds, before we round off with Pin Pricked reminding us that the full moon collides with Mars on Monday night (party at Wael’s). Herr Hund joins her for a drink, before the intrepid among us head to the Rugby Club for the On-On. On-On!!
